Everything you need in Portugal, in more ways than one

Portugal. The mere mention of this country conjures up images of mystery, romance, and beauty.  From adventure escapes, to historical journeys, Portugal has something for everyone rolled into one amazing package. Quiet villages and seascapes, bustling cities, and a vibrant culture make Portugal one of the most amazing countries in the world for holiday travellers.  Backpacking tours, magnificent cathedrals, incredible museums, and surprises around every corner make booking Portugal package holidays a great way to spend time with family and friends.

One of the top sights in Portugal is fantastical Palacio Nacional da Pena. Built around 1840 for Queen Maria II, this oddly artistic structure pays homage to Moorish customs while stepping into the bizarre with stone statues and bulwarks that make this a unique destination.  The Torre de Belem Fortress gives a nod to the discovery age of Portugal and is on the list of world-heritage sights. Well worth the visit, this fortress was built as a defence structure to protect and defend Lisbon’s harbour. Proving its worth, this fortress has stood as a testament to strength and stature for many years.

Portugal is not just for the student traveller or amateur historian. Surfers and beach goers will find Portugal delightful as well. The Praia do Guincho, previously the home of the world surfing and windsurfing championships, is the ultimate in water sports in Portugal. With fantastic wave action, this is a great place to participate, or, if you are not quite the avid surfer, the beach is also a great place to relax and spend the day. A word of warning, though, the undertow is rather strong here, so enjoy this great location with caution.

Portuguese nightlife is as varied as the different villages and cities scattered throughout the country. Travellers can find everything from a quiet, romantic evening filled with culture, to feeling the young vibration of a new generation. Night clubs, restaurants, pubs, and other activities make every evening fun with the added interest of the unexpected.

With so much to see and do in Portugal, it is easy to see why this is one of the most exciting holiday destinations in the world. Portugal truly has everything you need for an amazing experience. Check it out for yourself! Book your trip today.

London: a city with history like no other

It is said by some that the name of London derives from Lludd’s Town based on Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia Regnum Britanniae, wherein he made allusion to a legendary King named Lludd who ruled in the prehistoric past.  While it sounds about right, modern scholarship and archaeology has ruled out the possibility that any settlement existed at the site of present day London before the Romans built a military depot there shortly after they invaded Britain in 43 A.D.

While the provenience of the name may be a mystery, it is clear that London is a city with a history like no other, and since the Romans built the town it has grown into the undisputed economic and political nexus of Britain and one of the most important financial and cultural centres in the world.  London is the world’s most visited city, with over 27 million visits per year between international and domestic travellers.  A good many of those travellers looking for hotels in London are attracted by the city’s unique and rich history.

London itself is a giant museum for the history buff.  To be sure, London is filled with museums, over 240 of them at last count, from the quintessential British Museum in Bloomsbury to the Churchill War Room at Whitehall to Shakespeare’s Globe Exhibition in Southwark.  But the true history buff can literally walk through the centuries in a stroll about London

One can view sections of the Roman wall that once surrounded the old city that were built in the 2nd century, or see the Tower of London that dates to 1066, the Temple on Fleet Street built in 1185, The Jewel Tower at Westminster Palace built in 1365 to house Edward III’s treasures, St. James Palace, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square and a hundred other monuments and places that mark the centuries of London’s life.
